She was born in Kaiapoi, North Canterbury, New Zealand in 1858. As part of a party of three women, she was the first female to cross the Copland Pass. Whilst they were successful, their guide declared the route "unfit for ladies". She was the second woman, after Freda Du Faur, to traverse Mount Cook.
